I want to try contact lenses, but I am scared. Do they hurt?
I hear this question from a good portion of first time lens wearers when they come in for a fitting. Of course, the most honest answer I have is somewhere between “no” and “that depends”.
By no means do contact lenses “hurt”. Especially if you are going to be fit with soft lenses. When you first wear contacts, you may feel a slight tickly sensation. This feeling is just the edge of the lens touching the inside of your lid. If you’ve never worn contacts before, nothing has ever tickled the inside of your lids. This sensation goes away within a few minutes to a few days of wear with soft lenses.
If you are fit with gas permeable lenses, this sensation is a little more noticeable and takes a little more time to get used to. Either way, the awareness sensation of lenses goes away and you are left with crisp, clear, comfortable vision.
