I was wondering if there is any Bifocal Contact Lens that can be worn for a week or two? My eye doctor said that there is not. But a friend of mine said that there was. Please help, not sure if I need to find another doctor or not.

There are a couple of bifocal and multifocal contact lenses that are “approved” by the FDA for extended wear.

With soft lenses, there is only one at the moment. That is the Purevision multifocal by Bausch and Lomb. The purevision line of lenses are approved for up to 30 days of continuous wear; with your prescribing lens fitters OK

The other alternative is a gas permeable multifocal contact lens made of an extended wear approved material, such as menicon Z. While either of these styles of lenses will allow you the freedom to leave your lenses on for an extended period of time, you still may be more comfortable removing them and caring for them on a nightly basis.

Contact lens fitters will vary greatly in opinion when it comes to extended wear lenses. My personal feeling is that if someone is able to handle their lenses, then it is in their best interest to remove them, clean them, and allow their eyes to breath naturally every night.

So in answer to your question, yes, there are multifocal lenses approved for extended wear. There are not many, but they do exist. You may have better visual and comfort results if you allow your fitter the option to fit you with health and performance in mind, rather than overnight wear.
